The Most Addictive Sites on the Web, 2013

These websites are a guilty pleasure for many... they have an addictive appeal, and lend themselves to at least 30 mins of browsing per day, depending on your personal tastes. As you peruse the changing list below, remember that "SFW" stands for "Safe for Work", where the sites have clean content suitable for most viewers. Be warned, however: unless the site is expressly tagged as SFW below, be careful before you open it. Also: if you have a site to suggest for this ever-changing list: submit your favorite addictive website here...

1. Where Cool Things Happen

SFW: This photo blog is dedicated to inspiring news in art, travel, lifestyle, gadgetry, and most anything in life that will give you a 'WOW' feeling. The photographs here cover the entire spectrum of human experience, from sushi art, to driving dogs, to Mongalian desert hotels, to an insider look at Google's server farms. Wunderbar!

2. F***MyLife

You think your life sucks? Here are thousands of users sharing awful anecdotes and personal venting. How a boyfriend ruined someone's day, or how a teacher crushed a young person's esteem; how the mechanic shafted someone on a repair job, or how a beautiful girl destroyed a person's self concept. Pitiful? Yes. Addictive to read this stuff? Absolutely.

3. I Waste So Much Time Dot Com
iwastesomuchtime.com
Somewhat SFW: The website name says it all, but it understates just how compelling the content is. Take this teddy bear poster, for example. There is tremendous talent and thought put into a seemingly-inane illustration. Or watch this kid jumping skip rope... the coordination required here is impressive. The site name is very well earned, and you'll love every second that you spend here.

4. Reddit
reddit.com
Reddit is a combination of user-generated news and social voting. Everybody and anybody can post a link at Reddit, add a description, and encourage the world to visit that recommendation. Reddit users, in turn, vote positive and negative responses to grade the appeal of each link. Reddit is tremendously addictive for people with short attention spans.

SFW: If you like pop culture and enjoy following celebrities in the news, then you will absolutely revel in PopSalad. Score points for every time Lance Armstrong apologizes on TV. Advance your team every time America's Next Top Model eliminates a contestant. Choose the winner of Lady Gaga vs. Rihanna. Nifty!

7. The Chive
thechive.com
Somewhat SFW: The Chive is all about random-but-interesting news. It is also a photo and video blog of the wacky, the inane, the curious, the thought-inspiring, and the preposterous. While the content caters to post-adolescents and college-aged youths (i.e. many photos of undergrads having fun), there is definite content appeal for anyone who likes curious news. Come see why many people claim that The Chive is 'the best site in the world'.

SFW: This site is about poignant written letters. Letters from a crash victim to the other driver. Letters from a gay son to his mother. Letters from a spurned lover to her ex-partner. Letters of all kinds of high emotion and bizarre human experience. This site is absolutely mesmerizing as an exploration of human experience and emotion.
