78,000 People Apply for One-Way Trip to Mars

An ambitious project to establish a human colony on Mars has attracted applications from tens of thousands of would-be astronauts, just two weeks after applications opened.

The mission, a private venture by the Dutch non-profit organization Mars One, aims to send a crew to the Red Planet in 2022 – and, due to the physiological change in the human body after a stay on Mars, there’d be no coming back. That hasn’t deterred people, though: so far, over 78,000 people have applied to become one of Mars’ first immigrants (the company is expecting 500,000 applicants by the time applications close on August 31). “This is turning out to be the most desired job in history,” says Bas Lansdorp, co-founder of Mars One.

Day-to-day life on Mars will be no picnic: The organization says that the daily routine on the planet would involve construction work on the colony (installing greenhouses, for example), maintenance of the settlement’s systems and research into Mars’ climate and geological history–all in an inhospitable environment with unbreathable air and an average temperature in the planet’s mid-latitudes of around -58 degrees Farenheit.

But Mars One says it is not looking for applicants with specific skills, such as a science degree, that might be useful during an interplanetary posting. Instead, they are looking for people who “have a deep sense of purpose, willingness to build and maintain healthy relationships, the capacity for self-reflection and ability to trust.” They also want volunteers who are “resilient, adaptable, curious, creative and resourceful.” Candidates will receive a minimum of eight years training before leaving Earth, the company says.

“Gone are the days when bravery and the number of hours flying a supersonic jet were the top criteria for selection. Now, we are more concerned with how well each astronaut works and lives with the others–and for a lifetime of challenges ahead,” said Norbert Kraft, a former Senior Research Associate at NASA and Chief Medical Director for Mars One in a statement published on Mars One’s website.

Candidates hailing from over 120 countries (although the vast majority are from the U.S.) uploaded a video to Mars One’s website explaining why they’re suitable for the mission. Kyle, a 21-year-old grocery store clerk from the U.S., says he wants to be “an explorer and pioneer at the forefront of history.” Steven, a 43-year-old American who works in electronics, has even higher hopes for the mission: “I would like to go to Mars… to discover new life,” he says.

In addition to people skills, successful applicants must be good fundraisers too: Mars One plans to raise much of the mission’s $6 billion estimated cost through a reality TV show following the applicants as they undergo preparations for the one-way trip to Mars. They’ve got a little way to go yet, though: as of April 29, the money raised through donations and merchandise stood at $84,121.

Whether or not you think that Google Glass is something that you’d wind up using one day, you have to admit that the technology is impressive. Packed inside of the pair of specs is a computer running android, camera and all of the wireless capabilities you’d need. The idea of wearable computers is nothing new, and a team that explored Antarctica actually had their own pair of “Glass” long before it was en vogue.
In a blog post chronicling the team’s experience, Tina Sjogren fondly remembers what it was like to pull together a wearable computer running Windows 98, paired with a “finger” mouse for controls and a glass screen as its display. It sounds a lot like an early version of Google Glass, but this was truly a technological marvel, considering that it was built and used at the South Pole in 2001.
The specs of the device, which was called “South Pole Wearable,” are nothing short of amazing, including custom built software to share information and post photos. It was also solar powered, something that Google Glass could really use. It didn’t use 3G, 4G or WiFi, relying on satellites:

The entire kit weighed 15 pounds, which is almost double what the original Google Glass prototype weighed, about 8 pounds. It now weighs about as much as an average pair of sunglasses.
antarctica5Tina and Tom Sjogren set forth to build something that allowed them to transfer all types of information as they skied through the snowy South Pole. Sharing this type of information in real-time was not something that many could wrap their brains around, therefore the pair didn’t get the type of attention for their device that Google is getting for Glass today. Tina says:
We wore a computer on our hips, a mouse in our pocket, and the glass was our screen. We did it not to show off but because we had no other choice.
She also sees a future for Google Glass and regular consumers: “New technology often needs time to catch on and I can see a future for Google glass today. It will come down to how sleek and useful they are. A stylish design paired with all the wonders of augmented reality – what’s not to love?”

“COOL, MAYBE THE TIME HAS COME FOR THIS TECH”

Wearing Google Glass wasn’t the experience that Tina and Tom had back in 2001, as Tina refers to their display as “too bulky to wear all of the time.” The eye piece on their device had greenish text which, much like Google Glass, didn’t obstruct your view. It even had voice commands. The two even slept in their gear at nights, to keep it warm and protect it from the elements. In 2002, they became the first to broadcast live photos and sounds from the Antarctic ice cap.
The trekkers counted on Ericcson as their sponsor during the mission, and here’s a drawing they made of a “future explorer” wearing their device:

I spoke with Tina Sjogren today and she told me that the reason for building the device was based on their love of exploration: “Our specialty is to find and marry software and hardware for unique situations such as extreme expeditions, military, security and other.” The purpose of building the device was simple, yet profound: “We had a story to tell. There had never been live dispatches done from a skiing expedition on the continent before. We also helped General Dynamics with feedback on how this could work on aircraft carriers.”
Twelve years after the Sjogren team set out on their adventure, Google is trying to make the world around us equally as interesting with Glass. It’s too soon to know whether it will catch on with consumers once they’re made available to people other than developers.
If we’ve learned anything from Tina and Tom Sjogren, it’s that good ideas have this way of coming back year after year, getting better and more polished each time:

As Google Glass has gotten more publicity, Tina summarized her feelings about it succinctly, capturing the true mentality of someone who loves to see new things, explore new places and share experiences: “Cool, maybe the time has come for this tech.”

HTC First now only $0.99

Facebook may be trying to sweeten the deal to get Home into more hands, or AT&T and HTC might just want their money. But for some reason, the Facebook Phone aka the HTC First’s price has dropped from $99 to $0.99 on contract less than a month after its debut. Considering it comes with unbloated stock Android and a speedy LTE connection, that could be a bargain.
Facebook tells me “We think this is a good move by AT&T and have highlighted the new price on our Facebook Mobile Page.” AT&T is also running a discount special on the popular HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4, so this might not be as much a reflection of the First’s momentum as an overarching move on the carrier’s part. Plus, all phones get price drops eventually.
Facebook has maintained that its committed to working with manufacturers on handsets, so don’t expect this to be the last Facebook Phone. But it seems Home wasn’t a strong enough selling point to convince tons people to buy a phone with a soggy camera – my main gripe about the HTC First. The 5 megapixel lens did a crummy job in low light, and Home buries the controls for the camera making it harder to catch candid shots.

Less than one million people have downloaded Home for their Android phones, and many fewer may have been willing to pay $99 for a phone with it. But Home will get better, and so will any phone carrying it. As I wrote yesterday, I expect Facebook to address the main complaints about the “apperating system” in its monthly updates. Specifically, I’d bet on a deeper onboarding flow to make Home less confusing, and a way for it to preserve your widgets and homescreen app folders rather than completely replacing them as it does now.
If Home improves soon, or HTC releases another version of the First with a better camera, I think sales of the brand could pick up. Facebook might want to draft up some new commercials in the meantime, though,  as the last few made the First and Home seem like a non-stop barrage of interruptions.

Iron Man 3's Tony Stark and Tesla's Elon Musk: Separated at Birth?

By now, many of you have seen Iron Man 3, but now it's time to step back and think for a second: Who is this Tony Stark, anyway? Could PayPal co-founder, techno-entrepreneur and Tesla and SpaceX innovator Elon Musk be his real-world twin?

Here's food for thought: this infographic lays out the stark similarities between these two dudes. Come to think of it, they are of similar age, height, weight, and hey, both of their names end with a "K."

Those similarities are too superficial, though. You'll have to take a close look at the infographic below to get the full scoop, ultimately realizing the uncanny similarity between the origins, careers, innovations and education of Stark and Musk.

One thing's probably true — Musk, who's graced us with his presence right here in the Mashableoffices for an interview, is a billionaire, but he would have to be a trillionaire to take Stark's technological leaps.

Meanwhile, back in the real world, Marvel comics found a dozen potential real-life Tony Starks in the making with its Iron Man 3: Inventor and Innovator Fair. That event took place on Friday, May 3, the same day as Iron Man 3's release, earning $60 million just on its opening day.

Robert Downey Jr., who plays Iron Man, surprised the 12 finalists on stage at the Innovator Fair, and said, "I'm humbled. I congratulate all of you."

Facebook Acqhires Team From HTML5 Game Platform Spaceport.io, Which Will Keep Running

Spaceport.io has just announced that part of its team, but not its technology, is moving to Facebook, and the social network has confirmed the talent deal to me. But instead of shutting down, Spaceport.io will continue to operate its Adobe Air alternative under the direction of co-founder Peter Relan and the team from his incubator YouWeb that backed Spaceport.
The Spaceport team including Ben Savage(not the actor from Boy Meets World) could help Facebook build better cross-platform mobile experience for itself and its third-party developers. Facebook tells me “Ben Savage and the Spaceport team are a talented group of mobile engineers. We look forward to building products that people love together.” Spaceport was originally founded as Sibblingz Inc by Savage and Relan within the YouWeb incubator. It raised $3 million in April 2012 from BBC Worldwide and YouWeb.

For a remarkably clear, no bull , one-minute description of what Spaceport does, check out this video. But as our writer Leena Rao put it in 2011, “Spaceport allows game developers to build a game once, using Javascript, and have it play across all smartphone operating systems, with a native app-like experience and fast performance. The games run as a hybrid HTML5 – native app, and the code for the game is written once, in a simple scripting language, so that they can then run on any device. With Spaceport, developers just need to revise the JavaScript code for their game in the HTML page once. After doing so, they will see immediate updates take place in their game across every device.”
Developers will still be able to build on the YouWeb-supported Spaceport platform. Some early users of the platform include Nickelodeon, and social game heavyweight Crowdstar, who used Spaceport to build its hit game It Girl.
So how does the Spaceport team help Facebook? The social network launched an HTML5 game platform in late 2011 but it’s gotten very little traction. Developers seem to prefer building native apps that have more access to a mobile device’s hardware and that can handle better graphics. The Spaceport team could help Facebook build out that platform so it’s suitable for serious apps.
Alternatively, the Spaceport team might aid Facebook with porting its own rich native apps to the mobile web via HTML5. Facebook famously backtracked on the mobile web standard after spending years building its iOS and Android apps on the architecture. It eventually realized HTML5 made the apps run too slowly, so it rebuilt them 100% native. Spaceport could allow the Facebook mobile team port its native apps to HTML5 so all the code doesn’t have to be rewritten. That could let Facebook continue shipping mobile products quickly so it doesn’t get picked apart by more nimble, mobile-first startups.

DivX Plus Streaming certified TVs by Toshiba



Just in case you didn't have enough content options from the likes of Roku and yourcable set top box, Toshiba has partnered with Rovi to integrate the DivX Plus Streaming codec into a new line of TVs. The streaming format promises enhanced multimedia controls like multi-language subtitles, resumable playback across devices and Dynamic Resolution Scaling, which should be good for those with fluctuating bandwidth. However, there aren't that many services behind the format just yet, though Knowhow Movies by Dixons Retail in the UK has pledged its support. Still, one can never have enough ways to entertain the kids.

EA games will skip Wii U due to performance issues

EA's new Frostbite 3 engine isn't coming to the Wii U, says developer
EA's Frostbite 3 engine, which underpins many of the company's next generation titles, looks like it won't support Nintendo's Wii U. Johan Andersson, Technical Director of the Frostbite project at EA DICE, says the company tested Frostbite 2 on the console and found the results to be "not too promising," to the point where it "chose not to go down [the] path" of porting the next version. Leaked slides from earlier this year revealed that EA has approximately 15 games in development that use Frostbite 3, the implication being that Wii U gamers are going to miss out on some fairly big titles, including Battlefield 4Star Wars, the next Mass Effect and, as Joystiq pointed out last week, this year's version of Madden NFL. It all adds up to a notable loss of support for the new console -- but hey, EA-style gaming was hardly a core part of the Nintendo experience in the first place.

Facebook + Google Glass



Facebook has made its way to Google Glass. Sharing to Facebook, that is, in the form of a third-party app appropriately named “Glass to Facebook.”


Once connected to your Facebook account, the app lets you share pictures taken with Glass to your Facebook account. The process is exceptionally similar to the how the current third-party Twitter client works for Glass, in that it makes your Facebook account a contact with which you share photos.







We gave it a whirl, and it works as advertised. After connecting my Facebook account and adding the app as a contact I was able to share a photo I had taken outside of our office window onto Facebook.



Photos show up as a small square on your profile, but you can click into them to view them full screen.




It's worth noting that there’s currently a security alert on TesseractMobile’s website — the creator of the app — associated with the site’s root certificate. So install at your own risk.


Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told Google’s Sergey Brin earlier this year that he couldn’t wait for Glass, which means we might see an official Facebook app come down the pipeline at some point as well.

Star Explosion Is Most Powerful Ever Seen

Two NASA space telescopes have captured what appears to be the most powerful star explosion ever detected, a cosmic event so luminous that scientists dubbed it "eye-wateringly bright" despite being 3.6 billion light-years from Earth.
On April 27, NASA's Swift Space Telescope and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope spotted the highest-energy gamma-ray burst (GRB) — an explosion of a massive star in the last stage of its life — ever before seen.

"We have waited a long time for a gamma-ray burst this shockingly, eye-wateringly bright," Julie McEnery, a project scientist for the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said in a statement. "The GRB lasted so long that a record number of telescopes on the ground were able to catch it while space-based observations were still ongoing."
One of the gamma-rays emitted during the eruption — seen in the constellation Leo — was three times more energetic than any other gamma-ray burst recorded by Fermi's Large Area Telescope (LAT), the instrument on the spacecraft responsible for detecting these kinds of explosions.
The gamma-ray burst (named GRB 130427A) was also the longest ever recorded, NASA officials said.
"The GeV [energy] emission from the burst lasted for hours, and it remained detectable by the LAT for the better part of a day, setting a new record for the longest gamma-ray emission from a GRB," NASA officials added.
Gamma-ray bursts are the brightest explosions yet observed in the universe.
"Astronomers think most [gamma-ray bursts] occur when massive stars run out of nuclear fuel and collapse under their own weight," NASA officials said in a statement. "As the core collapses into a black hole, jets of material shoot outward at nearly the speed of light."

Swift's detection of this burst was delayed. The satellite was moving between cosmic targets at the time of the eruption, but the spacecraft captured the explosion less than a minute after it began. Swift also aided astronomers in placing the gamma-ray burst closer to Earth than most other star explosions of its kind, NASA officials said.
"This GRB is in the closest 5 percent of bursts, so the big push now is to find an emerging supernova, which accompanies nearly all long GRBs at this distance," Goddard's Neil Gehrels, principal investigator for Swift, said in a statement.
Scientists are hoping to find a supernova within the area of the explosion in order to trace the gamma-ray burst back to its origins.

Observatories on the ground are keeping an eye on GRB 130427A's area of the sky to locate the supernova by mid-May.

Invisibility Cloak Created With 3D-Printers

Duke University researchers are developing a plastic invisibility cloak that can hide 3D objects from microwaves in their natural environment. 
Yaroslav Urzhumov, an assistant research professor in computer engineering Duke's Pratt School of Engineering, and his research team created the cloak using a standard 3D printer, which took between three to seven hours to print. Urzhumov used algorithms to determine the location, size and shape of the holes in the micrometer-thick cloak, helping to deflect microwave beams. 
"The design of the cloak eliminates the 'shadow' that would be cast, and suppresses the scattering from the object that would be expected," said Urzhumov in a statement. "In effect, the bright, highly reflective object, like a metal cylinder, is made invisible. The microwaves are carefully guided by a thin dielectric shell and then re-radiated back into free space on the shadow side of the cloak." 
Duke researchers believe sometime in the near future they will be able to reflect higher wavelengths, such as visible light.
"We believe this approach is a way towards optical cloaking, including visible and infrared," Urzhumov said. "And nanotechnology is available to make these cloaks from transparent polymers or glass. The properties of transparent polymers and glasses are not that different from what we have in our polymer at microwave frequencies." 
Urzhumov also said that their technique should also help create larger objects without the use of a 3D-printer.
"Computer simulations make me believe that it is possible to create a similar polymer-based cloaking layer as thin as one inch wrapped around a massive object several meters in diameter," he said. "I have run some simulations that seem to confirm this point." 
In recent weeks, news of the world's first 3D-printed handgun and a bionic ear designed by researchers at Princeton University have also made headlines.
Researchers published their finds in journal Optics Letters and said that anyone using a 3D-printer could create the cloak.
A MakerBot Replicator 2 printer is now just $2,199.   

Microsoft to boost Office Web Apps features

Microsoft plans to accelerate improvements in Office Web Apps, the browser-based version of the Office suite, adding features like real-time co-authoring of documents and the ability to run in Android tablets via mobile Chrome browser support.
The planned enhancements, scheduled for release at some point in the next 12 months, are part of a shift in the way Microsoft views Office Web Apps, the company said Tuesday.
Originally conceived in 2010 as a lightweight companion to the main desktop Office suite, Office Web Apps is now seen as a potentially more powerful product, thanks to improvements in browser technology and connection speeds.
“Our goal for Office Web Apps is that people can rely on it to create polished Office documents from start to finish,” Michael Atalla, director of Office 365 product management, said in an interview.
Office Web Apps, which is made up of Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote, is available for free to individuals as part of Microsoft’s SkyDrive cloud storage service for consumers. It’s also included with Office 365, the broader email and collaboration suite that has free and fee-based editions.
The online Office suite competes with other browser-based office productivity suites. Its main rival is the free Google Drive, which combines online storage with the Docs applications for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and other tasks.
Microsoft lagged Google and other competitors in this space. Google Docs has been around since 2007. However, Microsoft’s Office dominates this market on the desktop, and the company is making a push to extend the superiority of its desktop applications to the browser-based versions.
Microsoft wants to provide “an uncompromised Office Web Apps experience “ and bring the power of Office to the broadest set of users, Atalla said.
The real-time co-authoring feature will build on co-authoring capabilities already present in the product and will let users see edits from collaborators as they are made without the need to refresh their browser page. Microsoft also plans to beef up the authoring and editing features in Office Web Apps.
Meanwhile, the move to bring Office Web Apps to Android tablets will intensify the competition with Google Drive.
Back in October, Microsoft delivered a series of Office Web Apps enhancements designed to offer users a better experience on iPads.
Although Microsoft has so far resisted developing a full suite of native Office applications for iOS devices, its decision to improve the user experience of Office Web Apps on iPads was intended to offer an option to the many grumpy users who want to use the suite on their iPads.

The only Bat that knows how to drink

Imagine it's a hot day, and you're craving some cold lemonade. Someone offers you a glass, but with one condition: You can drink it only using your tongue, with no lips touching the glass. No straw.
You might have a problem.
But many animals — bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and bats — have tongues specifically designed to do this. All drink nectar from flowers using only their tongues.
In the latest issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a team describes one species of bat's particularly elaborate nectar-scooping tongue.
Pallas's long-tongued bats live in Central and South America. They're roughly 2 inches long, and they spend their nights going from flower to flower. And each bat has a tongue about twice as long as its head.
"They hover for just a few seconds over the flower corolla, and then they probe their tongue deep into the base of the flower tube and soak up nectar," says Cally Harper, the graduate student in ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown University, who led the study.
The challenge for all nectar feeders, Harper says, is to slurp up as much nectar as possible in the shortest possible time. That's because hovering over each flower takes a lot of energy, and to get enough food, the nectar slurpers have to visit many flowers in a single night.
Nature has come up with a variety of tongue designs, Harper says. "Hummingbirds have these bifurcated tongues that almost act like tweezers to tweeze up small droplets of liquid. And for butterflies, their tongues function almost like straws, where they have little pores at the tip of their tongue, where the nectar flows through those pores through the tube of that tongue."
Harper wanted to know how the Pallas's long-tongued bats scooped up sweet liquid. So she and her boss, Beth Brainerd, a specialist in biomechanics and evolutionary morphology, decided to film them in the laboratory, using a high-speed video camera.
The researchers knew the bat tongues were covered with little hairs, so they watched what happened to those hairs as the bats reached out for food.
When the tongue is inside the bat's mouth, they found, the hairs lie flat on the tongue's surface.
"And then very close to when the tongue is maximally extended, these hairs become erect," Harper says. "And when that happens, a space is created between each of the rows of hairs on the tongue tip. And nectar is loaded onto each one of those spaces."
It's like the bat's tongue is working like a mop, Brainerd says. "Not a sponge mop, but a stringy mop."
Brainerd says it turns out that each hair has blood vessels supplying it. When the bat sticks its tongue out to feed, the muscles of the tongue contract, pushing blood into the hair and making it stand on end. "The mechanism is like an active mop that's opening up to make more space for this liquid nectar to be collected," she says.
Other creatures, including bees and cats, have hairs on their tongues, too.
But no other animal is known to use the tongue hairs in quite this way, says Kurt Schwenk, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Connecticut.
"What made it so cool and exciting is this dynamic attribute they have of popping out when the blood pressure gets high enough," says Schwenk.
He says that the study shows how under-appreciated tongues are.
"When you start looking at tongues in different animal groups, you see this amazing diversity of form and function that I think would shock most people."
And for that matter, Schwenk says even the human tongue is more remarkable than we give it credit for.
"I'd suggest that in the privacy of your own home," Schwenk says, "go into the bathroom and look in the mirror, stick your tongue out and start examining the incredible movements you can make with your tongue."
The human tongue may not be great for slurping up liquids, but it is perfect for the foods we eat and all the languages we speak.

OK. So imagine this. It's a hot day. Someone offers you a cold lemonade. But there's one condition. You can drink it only using your tongue. No lips touching the glass, no straw. It's what bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds do when they slurp nectar from flowers. And now scientists have discovered a species of bat whose tongue is also a particularly fancy nectar scoop. NPR's Rhitu Chatterjee reports.
RHITU CHATTERJEE, BYLINE: The bats live in Central and South America. They're roughly two inches long and they spend their nights going from flower to flower.
CALLY HARPER: They hover for just a few seconds in font of the flower corolla and then they probe their tongue deep into the base of the flower tube and soak up nectar.
CHATTERJEE: Cally Harper, is at Brown University and an author of the new study. She says when the bat sticks its tongue out, that tongue is about twice the length of the animal's head.
HARPER: It's common name is the Pallas long-tongued bat.
CHATTERJEE: Now the challenge for all nectar feeders is to slurp up as much nectar as possible in the shortest possible time. That's because hovering over each flower takes a lot of energy.
